Towards a Regional Energy Strategy - A Sustainable Approach to Energy in the East Midlands

Cover of East Midlands consultation document The East Midlands Assembly has published a consultation document Towards a Regional Energy Strategy - A Sustainable Approach to Energy in the East Midlands. This provides a clear stepping stone on a path towards making the region a cleaner and more sustainable region, and identifies targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy by 2010 and 2020.

Don Lack, Chair of the East Midlands Energy Task Group, writes in its foreword that "The primary challenge and objective of the work described in this document is to reduce energy use, improve energy efficiency and achieve a significant take up of renewable energy at local and regional level. At the cutting edge of joined up thinking, the East Midlands is one of the most proactive and challenging regions for sustainability in Europe and one where there is considerable expertise and environmental champions.

"Towards a Regional Energy Strategy will be utilised to communicate the opportunities and stimulate key actions at all levels and through all sectors and this will require all of us to implement them in our homes and work places. The challenge is to be sustainable in our use of energy and grasp the opportunity to lead in the economic exploitation of the products and processes which this implies."

The report is divided into eleven main sections:
1. Introduction
2. Vision, Aims and Objectives
3. Profile of the East Midlands
4. Policy Framework and Integration
5. Reducing Energy Use
6. Energy Efficiency
7. Renewable Energy
8. Efficient Use of Fossil Fuels
9. Summary of Targets
10. Making It Happen
11. Monitoring and Review

The full report can be found on the website of the East Midlands Assembly, together with associated consultation documents. From the Home Page follow the links to the Integrated Regional Strategy, then to Environment Viewpoints and Strategies. Alternatively, this page has a direct link to the report only (PDF format, 900K). Since the publication of the report, the Regional Assembly has set up Energy4Enterprise (E4E), to provide a forum for all stakeholders within the East Midlands engaged in moving towards a sustainable approach to energy.

The National Energy Foundation was part of a team of three organisations that wrote the report, led by Land Use Consultants. The Foundation is always keen to help drive forward sustainable energy by assisting local authorities, counties, regions and other statutory bodies identify opportunities and responsibilities, by creating energy strategies, undertaking feasibility studies and carrying out consultation exercises. We can also work with the private sector in developing corporate energy strategies and policies. For more information about this area of our work, please contact Gareth Ellis or Ian Byrne on 01908-665555 or e-mail nef@natenergy.org.uk.
