Energy Efficiency Accreditation Awards - 2001The Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme is recognised as the national benchmark standard in energy efficiency, and an established highlight of the energy efficiency year is the annual presentation of awards for the Scheme. At this year's event held in Birmingham on Wednesday, 5th December, thirty organisations were presented with their awards, and a record number of eighteen gained re-accreditation. Director of the Scheme Martin Fry told those present, "with the introduction of the Climate Change Levy and increased gas prices, many users now have energy bills up to 50% higher than at this time last year. There is thus both an economic incentive to reduce costs as well as an environmental pressure to reduce CO2 emissions. The Accreditation Scheme provides the ideal framework for an energy efficiency improvement and CO2 emission reduction programme." He added that the Scheme has gained international recognition by being the only paper on energy management presented at the recent World Energy Congress, which was attended by 3500 delegates from 99 countries and held in Buenos Aires in October.
This years awards include the one-hundred and fiftieth accreditation since the Scheme was introduced in 1993 - to Airedale General Hospital. The total annual energy bill of accredited organisations is around £1bn. The Scheme was jointly launched by the trade association ESTA in conjunction with the Institute of Energy. It is managed by the National Energy Foundation and endorsed by the CBI. The Scheme is sponsored by Powergen, who also support the EiBi Energy Manager of the Year award. Powergen were the hosts at this year's awards presentation lunch at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel which was attended by over one hundred and fifty guests.
